About the State Department Blog

The mission of the U.S. Department of State is to create a more secure, democratic, and prosperous world for the benefit of the American people and the international community.

Through its websites and other online resources, the Department offers broad public access to a wide range of information. Blogs.state.gov offers the public an alternative source to mainstream media for U.S. foreign policy information. This blog offers the opportunity for participants to discuss important foreign policy issues with senior Department officials.

State Department Bloggers

Frederick Jones
San Francisco native Frederick Jones has been a member of the Foreign Service for ten years. He graduated from Howard University, majoring in Political Science, and later received a law degree from the University of California-Davis School of Law. His first posting abroad with the State Department was as Assistant Information Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid. Years later, he still misses Spain — the food, the sun, the nights, Real Madrid games, bullfights, and his friends. He returned to Washington where he worked as a spokesman/press officer in the press office and later as Media Coordinator for the Secretary of State, traveling with Secretary Powell to 40 countries during his 11 month tenure. From there, Frederick was detailed to the National Security Council serving as deputy spokesman under then National Security Advisor Rice. He was later named Special Assistant to the President and Spokesman for the National Security Council. He worked in that capacity for 18 months, serving as the principal White House spokesperson on matters of foreign policy and traveling with the President on all overseas travel. Frederick lives in Washington D.C. with his wife, Dr. Kimberly Jones, and their baby boy, Kai.

Masharika Prejean
Mix two parts “go get ‘em” attitude with one part southern charm and you’ve created Masharika Prejean. Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, Masharika attended the undergraduate institution of Duke University and later graduated from Tulane University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Economy/Pre-Medicine. In a similar fashion to most twenty-somethings, she followed her budding internal compass – rather than the title on her diploma – and pursued a Master’s Degree from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. Between Longhorn football pre-game tailgating, enjoying all that “Keeps Austin Weird,” and embracing the trusted approach of learning by doing – in the community; in the Texas Legislature; and through student-led, civic focused initiatives – Masharika discovered her niche in international affairs. Since graduating from the LBJ School, she has become a Presidential Management Fellow serving as the Special Assistant to Spokesman for the U.S. Department of State, Sean McCormack.

As the voice of this blog, Masharika has been given one point of instruction – there are no rules. The camera and the blog entries that are posted on this site are based on experiences that organically develop during her travels with Secretary Condoleezza Rice and her accompanying advisory support team. The thoughts and views expressed on this blog do not directly represent those of Secretary Rice, the U.S. Department of State or the U.S. Federal Government. Rather, the purpose of this site is to provide a venue for the general public to receive a “behind the scenes” view of how U.S. diplomatic missions to foreign countries are carried out, the people that are involved, and the cultural aspects that make each destination uniquely its own.
